Don’t Get Scammed – 5 Questions for Your Roofing Contractor

DIY Roof Maintenance

If your roof is beginning to fall apart before your very eyes, it is time to bring in a roofing contractor and solve the problem. You may need to fully replace the roof or simply perform repairs in specific spots, your contractor will know. Unfortunately, around this time of year, many roofing contractors like to take advantage of unwary homeowners. You can avoid being scammed by asking these five simple questions.

Are You Licensed?

Your roofing contractor should be able to provide proof of their licensing. Most states require some form of roofing contractor licensing in order to operate. Research the code requirements for your state and be sure your contractor meets all of them.

Do You Have Workman’s Comp Insurance?

The answer you want to hear is ‘Yes’. A roofing contractor who does not have their own insurance is an accident waiting to happen. Do not waste your time, as you may be stuck with their medical bills after an accident.

Do You Carry Liability Insurance?

General liability insurance covers your property, which is something all homeowners want to ensure their contractor has. If a contractor accidently destroys your roof or home during the process, you need to be covered.

Will You Remove the Old Roof?

Many roofing contractors are looking for ways to save time and money, so they leave the old roof in place and simply shingle over the old material. However, those old shingles will often lead to rot and mold forming in your home. The contractor should remove the old roof before any repairs or replacement material goes up.

What is the Warranty on my New Roof?

A warranty is an important selling point for many. As a homeowner, you want to have at least a 25-year warranty on your new roof from a contractor. Without a warranty, you are liable to pay for repairs or new work if it was done incorrectly.
