Commercial Flat Roof Repair — Resources and Materials

Flat Roof

Many years ago, tar and gravel were the most common flat roof material for commercial properties. Roofing contractors installed these two substances as a waterproofing surface for flat roof structures. Today, modern technology has advanced exponentially. There are now numerous other flat roof materials and resources to take advantage of, many of which provide a longer lifespan and reflective properties, too. Ultimately, a flat roof, with the right material, will keep your structure cooler in the summer and more energy-efficient, too.

Built-Up Roofing

Otherwise known as tar and gravel roofing, built-up roofing is a classic in the roofing industry. The roof includes 3-5 layers “built-up” of asphalt laminated in hot tar, hot asphalt, or pitch. We add gravel last to offer some protection against UV rays. Due to its short lifespan, built-up roofing is becoming less popular with commercial property owners. The negatives simply outweigh the positives right now.

Single Ply Membrane

You may have heard the common misconception that all single ply membranes are exactly the same. This is wrong. There are different layers with varying performance and advantages. The primary requirement of any single ply membrane, however, is that it must be waterproof, non-flammable, easy to repair, and pliable at varying temperatures.

Flat Roof Repair

When it comes to fixing a leak in a flat roof, any of the above-mentioned materials or styles are efficient at plugging a hole. Depending on the material currently used for your commercial roof, you do have options. Some materials are more energy efficient, while some cost less to work with, and others are just easy to repair.
